The Flow & Volume Laboratory of the Hellenic Institute of Metrology has developed a novel web application, using open source software. The application is able to perform the complete mathematical and statistical interpretation of raw calibration data as obtained during the calibration of tanks and vessels by the volumetric method or any other legitimate calibration method that produces an array of data relating the volume of the vessel to its height. A major advantage of the application is that it is completely web-based and supports multi-lingual interfaces while it performs in real-time a quite complex and time consuming statistical interpretation of the calibration data. The application does not require any specific knowledge of statistics by the user and delivers an analytical calibration table and the associated measurement uncertainty. The application is available to every interested party through the web site of EIM (www.eim.gr).

Abstract: Europeana is an evolving service that tries to be a single access point for Europe’s cultural heritage. The metadata aggregation for Europeana is a procedure that needs interoperability and software tools for transforming metadata to Europeana Semantic Elements (ESE). This aggregation imposes requirements difficult to be implemented in many small institutions.  To accommodate these needs and help the Greek institutions contribute their content to Europeana, we developed a series of tools. The Hellenic Aggregator that has established a single communication point with Europeana. The Open Arc-hives Engine (OAE) software for creating digital library aggregators. The oaipmh.com tool for validating OAI-PMH enabled repositories. Other wrappers that enable repeatable generation and har-vesting of ESE-compatible metadata via OAI-PMH. We present these tools and the way that helped the Greek cultural institutions in contributing content to Europeana.

With the explosive growth of the Word Wide Web, information overload became a crucial concern. In a data-rich information-poor environment like the Web, the discrimination of useful or desirable information out of tons of mostly worthless data became a tedious task. The role of Machine Learning in tackling this problem is thoroughly discussed in the literature, but few systems are available for public use. In this work, we bridge theory to practice, by implementing a web-based news reader enhanced with a specifically designed machine learning framework for dynamic content personalization. This way, we get the chance to examine applicability and implementation issues and discuss the effectiveness of machine learning methods for the classification of real-world text streams. The main features of our system named PersoNews are: (a) the aggregation of many different news sources that offer an RSS version of their content, (b) incremental filtering, offering dynamic personalization of the content not only per user but also per each feed a user is subscribed to, and (c) the ability for every user to watch a more abstracted topic of interest by filtering through a taxonomy of topics. Interoperability of digital libraries is a problem of great complexity but also of immense – and increasing – significance. Huge investments in digitizing legacy cultural heritage material and organising new digital born content can be exploited in more efficient ways through interoperable, open systems.
This presentation concerns pragmatic approaches on achieving interoperability in digital libraries and repositories based on relevant experiences of the authors in real-life, large scale, successful use cases such as: (a) the establishment – within the EuropeanaLocal project – of a national aggregator, harvesting digital content (more than 170000 records) from various repositories across the country to incorporate it into Europeana, the single portal / gateway to distributed European cultural heritage resources developed as an initiative of the European Commission, (b) the development and operation of openarchives.gr, a single, unified search engine over Greek digital libraries and repositories that currently indexes metadata from 39 systems (more than 340000 records) and (c) the inclusion of content (roughly 40000 items) from disparate data sources to Pandektis, a thematic repository of cultural heritage and humanities material and Helios – the institutional repository of the National Hellenic Research Foundation.
Experiences from the aforementioned case studies will be presented. Among others, these concern the successful utilisation of FLOSS platforms as well as the creation of new FLOSS software, such as the DSpace plugin for Europeana Semantic Elements
(http://vbanos.gr/?p=189), whose development and enhancement has experienced the benefits of collaborative contributions within the Greek digital library community, something that would have been almost impossible if it had not been for FLOSS. Furthermore, the support of open standards and protocols will be elaborated as a crucial aspect of accomplishing interoperability. Relevant standards concern knowledge and metadata representation in different environments (e.g., Dublin Core, Europeana Semantic Elements, MODS, MARC, RDF, OWL) as well as protocols and approaches for content search and retrieval (e.g., OAI-PMH, SRU/W, Z39.50, OpenSearch, OAI-ORE, Linked Data). Besides allowing applications like content aggregation and unified search, supporting open standards and protocols enables the availability of material in digital libraries as re-usable open data that can be freely utilised by developer communities for the creation of advanced, cross-system value-added services, mash-ups and for exploitation in many other types of applications. Approaches and methods for developers to re-use freely available digital
libraries content will be also described.

Abstract: EuropeanaLocal is a best practice network project, which will help Europeana to enhance its content and service by applying automated metadata harvesting among distributed
repositories. Greek content providers and its metadata aggregator, the Veria Central Public Library (VCPL), are in a testing metadata harvesting period, in the framework of EuropeanaLocal. This paper analyzes the practices that the Greek Institutional Repositories follow in order to transform their metadata schemas to European Semantic Elements (ESE) profile and to export this profile through OAI-PMH to the VCPL aggregator. In addition, it describes the way in which the VCPL aggregates the ESE exported metadata output. Finally, it emphasizes on the transformation and aggregation tools that have been launched on a local level, before Europeana disseminates its official ones.

The problem

The vanilla dspace installation supports exporting Dublin Core metadata through the OAI-PMH protocol. For instance, the dspace installation of Veria Central Public Library OAI-PMH interface is:

The problem is that if we want to share our metadata with Europeana, we have an incompatibility because Europeana does not support Dublin Core but Europeana Semantic Elements (ESE), an application profile which is based on Dublin Core.

Until the current version of  dspace (1.5.2) ESE is not supported. Below, a procedure is outlined which is essential in order to modify dspace in order to export ESE metadata. This goal is achieved through the inclusion of a OAI plugin, which is used to export ESE metadata. After following the procedure below, the result will be like this:

Procedure

First of all, the Europeana Metadata Schema and the appropriate europeana elements must be present in your dspace repository.

The following procedure has been performed in CentOS Linux 5.4 and Debian Linux 5. Prerequisites: Linux, Sun Java JDK, Apache Maven 2, Apache Ant, DSpace version 1.5 or newer. Warning! This plugin does not function in older versions of DSpace.

The procedure is comprised of two steps:

1. Compile java-oai.jar with ESE support.
2. Configure the current dspace installation in order to enable ESE support in the new java-oai.jar.

Compile java-oai.jar with ESE support

The file java-oai.jar is part of the dspace package. It is not required to compile the whole dspace package but only the module which is responsible for the OAI interface.

1. Download from: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dspace/files/ the file dspace-1.5.2-src-release.tar.bzip2 and untar it to a local folder.
   • tar xjf dspace-1.5.2-release.tar.bzip2
     
2. Download file ESECrosswalk.java and move it to the folder: dspace-1.5.2-src-release/dspace-oai/dspace-oai-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/app/oai
   • mv ESECrosswalk.java dspace-1.5.2-src-release/dspace-oai/dspace-oai-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/app/oai
     
3. Using the linux shell, go to the folder: dspace-1.5.2-src-release/dspace-oai/dspace-oai-api and run mvn package. If everything works OK, the system will compile the software and after a lot of messages, the text BUILD SUCCESSFULwill appear on the console. If an error occures, some of the prerequisite files such as Sun Java JDK and Apache Maven are not installed correctly.
   • cd dspace-1.5.2-release/dspace-oai/dspace-oai-api/
   • mvn package
4. Given that all the previous steps have been performed according to the plan, the file dspace-1.5.2-src-release/dspace-oai/dspace-oai-api/target/dspace-oai-api-1.5.2.jar must have been created.

Configure the current dspace installation in order to enable ESE support

1. First of all, we backup the current dspace installation.
   • tar cvjf /backup/dspace-backup.tar.bzip2 /dspace
2. Shut down Tomcat
   • /etc/init.d/tomcat stop
3. Copy the newly created dspace-oai-api-1.5.2.jar from our compilation and replace file /dspace/webapps/oai/WEB-INF/lib/dspace-oai-api-1.5.2.jar in the current dspace installation.
   • mv dspace-1.5.2-src-release/dspace-oai/dspace-oai-api/target/dspace-oai-api-1.5.2.jar /dspace/webapps/oai/WEB-INF/lib/dspace-oai-api-1.5.2.jar
4. Modify dspace configuration file /dspace/config/oaicat.properties and append the following text entry Crosswalks.ese=org.dspace.app.oai.ESECrosswalk
5. Start Tomcat.
   • /etc/init.d/tomcat start

Plugin features

The ESE Plugin modifies OAI-PMH output of dspace and adds some new elements in each record:

• europeana:type valid values: TEXT, VIDEO, SOUND, IMAGE
• europeana:provider e.g. Veria Central Public Library
• europeana:object thumbnail URL (if any). This field is generated automatically if it is not set by the dspace administrator in each record. The plugin check automatically if there are any THUMBNAIL Dspace Bitstream Bundles for each item and if true, gets the URL of the first one of them. e.g. http://medusa.libver.gr/retrieve/7033/GRVER_000000000000000025.jpg.jpg
